Evaluating the Effect of Chemical Digestion Treatments on Polystyrene Microplastics: Recommended Updates to Chemical Digestion Protocols

نویسندگان

چکیده

Establishing the toxicity and exposure consequences of microplastics (MPs) on marine organisms relies nondestructive isolation plastics from biological matrices. MPs are commonly extracted these matrices by chemical digestion using alkali (e.g., potassium hydroxide (KOH) sodium (NaOH)), oxidative hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)) and/or acidic nitric acid (HNO3)) reagents. Although conditions can be highly effective for MP extraction, they also react with plastics. This attribute an inaccurate representation plastic contamination altering visual characteristics (size, shape, color), thereby impeding identification potentially returning erroneous numbers ingested particles. In this study, degradative impacts assessed routinely applied reagents (i) KOH, (ii) NaOH, (iii) H2O2, (iv) HNO3 polystyrene (PS) based sized between 200 µm 5 mm. Degradation PS is evaluated FT-IR, gel permeation chromatography, NMR, photoluminescence spectroscopy, microscopy. These studies reveal to most destructive MPs, while result in negligible changes properties. results recommended used as a guideline update current protocols ensure treatment MPs.

Effects of Physico-Chemical Post-Treatments on the Semi-Continuous Anaerobic Digestion of Sewage Sludge

Sludge production in wastewater treatment plants is increasing worldwide due to the increasing population. This work investigated the effects of ultrasonic (ULS), ultrasonic-ozone (ULS-Ozone) and ultrasonic + alkaline (ULS+ALK) post-treatments on the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge in semi-continuous anaerobic reactors. Three conditions were tested with different hydraulic retention times ...

Chemical Reactor Models of Digestion Modulation

In this paper we give an overview of the application of chemical reactor theory to models of digestion processes and indicate how those models extend to eco-physiological questions of modulation of digestion and feeding. In particular, we discuss processes that organisms may use to manage their nutrient intake, including optimality, ecological stoichiometry, and regulatory physiology. In the co...
